New in perfect time: Lake Zug boat cruise and railway journey to the top of the Rigi
Get on, enjoy and travel seamlessly – it's now that easy to travel up to the Queen of the Mountains. The Rigi railway's new timetable, which is aligned with the morning and afternoon schedules, makes it possible.
Start the day with a coffee on Lake Zug, with the majestic Rigi in view – and a little later, enjoy the breathtaking view from the summit at lunch time. The 150th anniversary of the Arth-Rigi railway provided the impetus to optimise the timetable of the Rigi railway and to improve connections from Zug.
Historical connection
“The journey via Arth and Goldau to the Rigi was the first and most important connection. It has historical significance, and we wanted to revive it with sleek connections,” explains Urs Eberhard, Chairman of the Board of Directors of RigiPlus AG, who was largely behind this innovation.
In the past, Arth was the main starting point for trips to the Rigi – accessible by boat across Lake Zug. The Arth-Rigi railway opened in 1875, making the experience even easier. The construction of the Gotthard railway in 1897 then shifted traffic to Goldau. But the emotional connection between the Rigi and Zug has always remained.
Perfect connections instead of waiting times
Until now, travellers in Goldau often had to accept long waiting times. That is now a thing of the past: just a few minutes after the ship arrives in Arth, the bus leaves for Goldau, where there is only an 8-10 minute transfer time to the Rigi railway. The optimised connections are also intended to promote public transport – something that is very close to Urs Eberhard's heart. “At 70%, the Rigi railways already have the highest public transport share in Switzerland – if not worldwide. Now we could even increase this figure.”
An attractive combined offer is online: “A relaxing boat trip across Lake Zug, a nostalgic ascent to the top of the Rigi – and a culinary delight at the summit, be it a leisurely lunch or a hearty cheese sandwich. With the streamlined connection, we are creating a seamless, holistic experience.”
PS: The city of Zug has been connected with the Arth-Rigi railway for 150 years. Various offers and events are therefore planned for Zug residents, including free tickets for a trip to the Rigi, tickets for the Rigi Festival and two exclusive sunrise trips.
