DJ Giovanni in an interview

DJ Giovanni about himself

In Latin America, we grow up with music - from salsa to merengue, bachata, cumbia, Latin rock and corridos. My passion for salsa began at the age of 18. I came to Switzerland in 1999 and quickly became involved in the Latin community and Latin parties, where I danced for many years.

15 years ago, I realised how happy it makes me when people dance to my music and have fun. So I started DJing and helping other DJs until I was playing regularly at the Salsaschiff and at various events such as Juanes Events, Dukes Restaurant and the Badibar in Zug.

The Salsaschiff is a special event that takes place four times every summer and is definitely one of my favourite events!

1. tell us in a few short sentences who you are, where you come from and what you are passionate about.
I am Giovanni Cruz from Quito, Ecuador. I am passionate about music, sports, getting to know new cultures, travelling, dancing, good salsa music and nice conversations.

2. what does music mean to you, and in particular Latin American music that inspires you to salsa?
Music is an essential part of life for me. Latin American music and salsa in particular mean joie de vivre and passion to me. They embody the rhythm and energy of my homeland and bring people together.

3. how did you get into music and how did you become a DJ?
I started listening and dancing to salsa at the age of 18 and developed a deep passion for it. When I came to Switzerland in 1999, I quickly met the Latino community and attended many Latin parties. Fifteen years ago, I discovered that it makes me happy to bring joy to people through music. So I started DJing occasionally and helping other DJs until the opportunity arose to perform regularly at various events.

4. do you dance salsa yourself? And if so, where did you learn it?
Yes, I dance salsa myself. I started in Ecuador and continued here in Switzerland, taking part in Latin parties and events where I developed my skills ?

5. what is special about organising a salsa party on a boat?
A salsa party on a ship is special because the atmosphere is simply unique. People come dressed up and in a good mood to enjoy the night. The sunset over Lake Zug, the music and the cocktails create a great experience.

6. what do you personally like about making music on the boat?
I like to see how the music touches people and makes them dance. The combination of good music and the sunset creates a special atmosphere that everyone enjoys. It makes me happy to be part of these special moments and to see people happy.
